December Scarf Yarn Use Calculator
Work out when to stop working the bib and move on to the Set-up Row.
Your target remaining weight
Stop working the bib when approximately this much yarn remains.
You can use approximately — of your starting yarn for the bib.
Keep approximately — for the Set-up Row, ties and finishing.
Weigh your yarn before casting on and enter the total weight above. As you work the bib, weigh your remaining yarn. When it reaches the target weight shown by the calculator, finish the bib and move on to the Set-up Row.
How to Use the December Scarf Calculators
See how the Yarn Use Calculator and Set-up Row Calculator work together to help you customise your December Scarf.
Set-up Row Calculator
The December Scarf is written for Aran/Worsted weight yarn, but its construction makes it easy to substitute another yarn weight, work at a different gauge, or even make a different size, other than the three that are given.
When using an alternative yarn weight or working a different size, work the bib section to your preferred depth rather than following the stitch counts given in the pattern. Before beginning the short-row shaping, you’ll need to position M1 and M2 so that the section between them — Measurement A on the schematic — remains approximately 9 cm/3.5” wide.
How to use the calculator
Once your bib has reached the depth you want, count the number of stitches currently on your needles.
Next, using your own gauge, work out how many stitches measure approximately 9 cm/3.5”. Enter both numbers into the calculator below and it will work out your Set-up Row for you, including exactly where to place M1 and M2.
A note on stitch counts
Your gauge may mean that the exact number of stitches measuring 9 cm/3.5” cannot be centred evenly across your Set-up Row. That’s absolutely fine. The calculator will identify this and give you the nearest workable options, keeping Measurement A as close to 9 cm/3.5” as possible while ensuring the stitches on either side remain equal.

Your Set-up Row
left side | Measurement A | right side
The Set-up Row adds two stitches with yarn overs. The calculator centres Measurement A between M1 and M2, then divides the remaining stitches equally between the two sides.
