Description
The December Scarf is a versatile bandana-style scarf knitting pattern designed in three sizes, from a neat neckerchief-style scarf through to a larger version that edges into shawl territory.
Worked flat from the bottom up, the scarf begins at the tip of the triangular bib before the ties are shaped one at a time using short rows. A continuous I-cord edge is worked throughout, giving the scarf a beautifully polished finish all the way around. It can be worked in a single colour or in two-colour stripes.
The pattern is written for Aran/Worsted weight yarn, but the construction makes it very easy to customise. You can use a different yarn weight or gauge, alter the finished size, or work according to the amount of yarn you have available. Guidance is included in the pattern, along with optional calculators on the December Scarf Pattern Support page to help you customise your scarf.
Skill Level ~ Adventurous beginner.
Method ~

The pattern includes two cast-on options: an invisible I-cord cast-on using Judy’s Magic Cast-On, or a long-tail cast-on with a set-up row.
The short-row shaping uses shadow stitches, creating smooth, nearly invisible turning points. Full instructions are included for both right-side and wrong-side shadow stitches.
